Is it Ok for Christians to Download Pirated Movies online?

Most of us really loved to watch movies but prefer to watch it at home instead of crowding in movie houses. Piracy has been a rampant problem in the online world. Movie makers and producers created a great war against piracy since it gambles the profit that their film should be getting from viewers. Since it is somewhat a form of fraud, do you think it is a sin for us Christians to engage in watching or downloading pirated movies online?

*Did the Bible say that it is wrong to watch pirated films? Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Romans 13:1-2

Of course the Bible wouldn’t tell you about movie piracy because movies did not yet exist in the past. However, the Bible reminds us that we should obey our governing authorities. Since it is against the law to download pirated materials, then it is definitely a since to do this. If we have clear permission to copy someone else’s material, then there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing. But if you obtain it by secrecy, then it’s like stealing in another form. Because of copyright laws, it is legally wrong to download, pirate, or share copyrighted material without the permission of the artist/author/publisher. Since God commands us to obey the law, the practice of digital internet piracy is a sin where it is illegal.

*What else is at stake when you copy and share copyrighted materials? Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. Luke 10:7

Do not take credit for something you did not do. Copying and sharing copyrighted materials is more than a legal matter since there are ethical and moral considerations than lie beneath them. The scripture mentioned above that the songwriter who worked to produce a particular song; say for instance, has earned compensation out of what he did. When you copy it, it was like you stole the sale that the song could have made. It is still stealing. The Bible tells us not to steal. When we download movies or other copyrighted materials, we steal them. We steal the property of others and it’s a sin.
